Pastel Society of Southern California: 5th Annual Members Show

Helped with the take-in judging for this year's Fifth Anniversary Member Exhibition at the Manhattan Beach Creative Arts Center. Marj Lightie, Dori Dewberry and I spent a very concentrated few hours assessing the many entries from our 100 + members. Though the hard work was on Friday where the hanging committee got to work putting all the creations up on the walls. My two pieces are Wilmington Colors and Redondo Wave.

The Exhibition runs from April 26 - May 16 2014

Please join us at the Opening Reception May 3 from 6-9pm

Saying Goodbye ...

"Redondo Wall" is a watercolor with pastel and is the result of many experiments of paint and media.
Sold it today at the Malaga Cove Art Show to a former P V resident who now lives in Texas.
When paintings work and are successful, they are difficult to part with. Like your kids at certain times......

I still enjoy the transparency of this water and the power of its foam..

The Arty Party

It's that time of year again when the Shrivers in Portuguese Bend invite about 20 very varied artists to show their work in the family courtyard. I have been showing there for ages and it's always a lot of hard work and fun. Meet lots of great people and all sorts of great things happen. It's a great way to buy some last-minute Christmas goodies, have some wine and socialize. It's this Sunday, the 22nd of December. Contact me if you'd like more info…….

Redondo Wall - Redondo Beach, California

"Redondo Wall" is a very recent creation. Pastel over watercolor washes on a very heavy paper. I was inspired by my recent trip to Great Britain where I saw many marine scenes. This picture is currently on view - and - available at the 608 North Fine Art Gallery in Redondo Beach.

The Coastguard's Lawn

This painting took various forms before I could get it right. After quite a few attempts to do a conventional plein air from this elevated spot overlooking Point Vicente Lighthouse in Palos Verdes, I left the lighthouse out completely and created a composition about the remaining contrast of the manicured coastguard property set amid nature's wilderness.

Wales Painting Workshop 23-30 September 2013

Getting ready for my Paint Wales Workshop from 23 - 30 September. We will be centered in the North at Rhuddlan. From here we will paint en plein air these beautiful castles: Denbigh, Conway, Caernarfon, Beaumaris and Harlech. They were all built during the English conquest of Wales in the late 13th century and are now World Heritage sites. Some were badly damaged in the English Civil War of the 1640's and some have been partially restored. They were popular subjects in the 1800's for British artists such as John Cotman and J M W Turner.

Here's some current photos © UK Crown copyright of Caernarfon above and Conwy below.
And here is a pastel of a stream I did in the 1970's while on one of my many visits to Wales.

During this Workshop trip we'll also visit and paint the magnificent, and always dramatic, Snowdonia National Park, and maybe take a train ride up the spectacular mountains. Weather permitting, of course.

More information and itinerary, plus how to get to Wales Workshop, on my website: www.BernardFallon.com

New Cuyama

On the way back from Monterey I took Hwy 166 through the Sierra Madre Mountains. A lovely drive that paused for a stop at New Cuyama.

An interesting sign to announce their humor --- or something else?

When you have a hammer, everything is a nail, when you have arithmetic, everything adds up.

Garapata State Park Cliffs

Heading down the California Hwy 1 from Monterey and Carmel. South of there the cliffs enveloped in mysterious mists. Lots of ideas for paintings and grey swirling compositions. Beautiful mauves and violet colours.

Plein Air, Last Light

Here are four plein air painters working at Portuguese Bend today to capture the late afternoon light. From left to right that's Rodolfo Rivademer, Mark Fenton, Bridget Duffy, and me, the long shadow on the ground. A wonderful experience in this chilly January light.

Homeless's Dictionary

Took a photo of this homeless woman along the Esplanade, Redondo Beach. Amongst her worldly belongings is her blue Webster's New Pocket Dictionary.

Wonder what this literate person has gone through to end up on this balmy December morning with nothing but waves, sky and a vast horizon stretching out in front of her.

6 x 6 Reception

Scene from tonight's 6 x 6 Opening Reception at the Randy Higbee Gallery in Costa Mesa.

Over 650 6" square paintings for sale. Some truly beautiful works.

The mind was boggled -- how so many artists can make 36 square inches so interesting!

Higbee 6 x 6 Exhibition

Coming this Saturday, 8 December, 5 - 9 pm is the Opening Reception for the annual 6 x 6 inch Exhibition at the Randy Higbee Gallery, 102 Kalmus Dr, Costa Mesa, CA92626.

My entry this year is "Broken Eggs" - oil on board.

It is a great show with dozens of amazing paintings in oil, pastel and acrylic from all over the US. Try to make it before it closes December 21st.

Palos Verdes Art Center Holiday Exhibition

L'aura Borealis

This Friday, 7th December, is the Holiday Exhibition Opening Reception at the PVAC, from 5 - 8 pm. The works are from artists affiliated with the Center.

The 100 Ways to look at the Muse show is also open. I have pieces in both, one photo and one painting. The photo is one of many images made by dozens of South Bay artists of Laura Orr, as The Muse. The idea was originated by Bondo Wyszpolski, the entertainment editor of the Easy Reader newspaper. The exhibition was first seen in Manhattan Beach in 2010.

Then, Scott Canty, the curator of the PVAC and the L A Municipal Art Gallery, took the idea a step further by opening it up to other painters and sculptors.  Quite an interesting result.

Night Muse, Redondo Beach

"Night Muse, Redondo Beach" is a 24 x 30" oil on canvas, painted with many oil glazes to give an ethereal feel to the wet sand and provide gorgeous colours in the darkness.

Also, in the 3rd gallery are 2 amazing paintings by F Scott Hess which are well worth seeking out. One of my favourite L A painters.

All these exhibitions are open until the end of December.
