Homeless's Dictionary

Took a photo of this homeless woman along the Esplanade, Redondo Beach. Amongst her worldly belongings is her blue Webster's New Pocket Dictionary.

Wonder what this literate person has gone through to end up on this balmy December morning with nothing but waves, sky and a vast horizon stretching out in front of her.

6 x 6 Reception

Scene from tonight's 6 x 6 Opening Reception at the Randy Higbee Gallery in Costa Mesa.

Over 650 6" square paintings for sale. Some truly beautiful works.

The mind was boggled -- how so many artists can make 36 square inches so interesting!

Higbee 6 x 6 Exhibition

Coming this Saturday, 8 December, 5 - 9 pm is the Opening Reception for the annual 6 x 6 inch Exhibition at the Randy Higbee Gallery, 102 Kalmus Dr, Costa Mesa, CA92626.

My entry this year is "Broken Eggs" - oil on board.

It is a great show with dozens of amazing paintings in oil, pastel and acrylic from all over the US. Try to make it before it closes December 21st.

Palos Verdes Art Center Holiday Exhibition

L'aura Borealis

This Friday, 7th December, is the Holiday Exhibition Opening Reception at the PVAC, from 5 - 8 pm. The works are from artists affiliated with the Center.

The 100 Ways to look at the Muse show is also open. I have pieces in both, one photo and one painting. The photo is one of many images made by dozens of South Bay artists of Laura Orr, as The Muse. The idea was originated by Bondo Wyszpolski, the entertainment editor of the Easy Reader newspaper. The exhibition was first seen in Manhattan Beach in 2010.

Then, Scott Canty, the curator of the PVAC and the L A Municipal Art Gallery, took the idea a step further by opening it up to other painters and sculptors.  Quite an interesting result.

Night Muse, Redondo Beach

"Night Muse, Redondo Beach" is a 24 x 30" oil on canvas, painted with many oil glazes to give an ethereal feel to the wet sand and provide gorgeous colours in the darkness.

Also, in the 3rd gallery are 2 amazing paintings by F Scott Hess which are well worth seeking out. One of my favourite L A painters.

All these exhibitions are open until the end of December.

"Catalina" pastel,
One of my favorite views of the island from Narcissa Drive, Portuguese Bend, on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

This is the 3rd Annual show for the PSSC at the Creative Arts Center in Manhattan Beach. As a new art group, we are doing quite well, so this is a good representative exhibition of our members.

Join us this Saturday, April 21st, from 6 - 9 pm, at our Reception, and meet the artists.

Address: Creative Arts Center, 1560 Manhattan Beach Blvd, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.

California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibition

Well, it's time for the California Art Club Gold Medal Show on Saturday. There were sixteen jurors to sift through all the entries, and there is an impressive roster of about 150 artists exhibiting.

This year we are at the Autry, site of the recent Masters of the West Show. That was pretty impressive, so here's hoping we can match the power of that event.

My piece, "Long Beach Farewell" is a view from Cabrillo Beach after a particularly wet and windy storm. I always anticipate the end of Pacific storms, as they give rise to the most gorgeous, clean and interesting skies. This was no exception. This painting shows a balance between the freedom of the skies as it turns over to night, as the industrial dockland weighs below.

Visit the exhibition on-line, if you are not in Los Angeles, by visiting cac@californiaartclub.org

Tonight is the reception for the "13 Exciting Photographers" at the new 608 North Gallery in Redondo Beach. I have 7 of my Liverpool photographs on display. They are still as strong as the day I shot 'em on film. I think they'll enjoy a fresh airing.

( This photo was made on the rear deck of a tugboat on the River Mersey. That's Birkenhead on the other side of the river. )

The gallery is open all week including Sundays.
